International Green Apple Award Winners
We’re thrilled to announce that the RAIN Project, led by West Northamptonshire Council, has won a prestigious International Green Apple Environment Award for our SuDS in Schools initiative! 🌿💧
Recognised for environmental excellence from over 700 entries worldwide, the project will be honoured at the House of Lords this November; a proud moment for our team and partners.
Delivered in partnership with Anglian Water Services and BioScapes this initiative saw 32 Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) planters installed across seven Northamptonshire primary schools, in the Harpers Brook and Wootton Brook catchments.
Together, they:
• Have the ability to capture and store over 15,000 litres of stormwater
• Support biodiversity with 10 habitats per planter
• Inspire pupils through hands-on learning and edible planting
• Six planters feature innovative smart sensors to collect real-time data on rainfall capture and reservoir capacity, forming the basis for future data-driven SuDS deployments.
We’re so grateful to our funders Anglian Water Services, our delivery partners BioScapes, the schools, Rickileigh Edwards & Sarah Parr, and most of all the pupils and teachers who brought the project to life!

The RAIN Project is funded by Defra as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes, which is managed by the Environment Agency. The programmes will drive innovation in flood and coastal resilience and adaptation to a changing climate.
