One Mile of Hedgerows

Issue
Over the decades, hedgerows have been removed or neglected across rural and semi-rural areas. This loss has broken up vital wildlife corridors, contributed to soil erosion, and removed a natural barrier that once helped to absorb and slow the flow of water – particularly important during heavy rainfall events.

Solution
By planting native-species hedgerows in carefully chosen locations, including along field boundaries, community spaces, gardens, and public footpaths, this project will restore lost green infrastructure. These new hedgerows will support birds, bees, and small mammals while also helping to trap surface water, stabilise soil, and reconnect fragmented habitats.

Benefits
Creating one mile of hedgerow will bring long-term environmental benefits to both people and nature. The hedgerows will reduce surface water runoff, support pollinators and nesting birds, and improve habitat connectivity throughout the catchments.

By absorbing carbon and improving soil health, the project will also contribute to broader climate goals.

Investing in this initiative is a powerful way to support sustainable land stewardship, increase local biodiversity, and demonstrate leadership in building climate-resilient communities.

🌟 Star Fact: Did you know that hedgerows can support up to 80% of our woodland birds, many of which are in decline.

Nature-Based Projects

Trees in Parks

Catchment: Harpers & Wootton Brook

The Trees in Parks project will plant a collection of striking specimen trees—such as ginkgo and liquidambar—in public parks and open green spaces across the Harpers Brook and Wootton Brook catchments. These trees will form elegant avenues and focal points that enhance local landscapes, provide shade, support pollinators, and improve resilience to flooding and climate change.

Front Garden Forests

Catchment: Harpers & Wootton Brook

This project will offer 100 beautiful blossom trees, including cherry and magnolia, to households across more urban parts of the Harpers Brook and Wootton Brook catchments. By planting trees in front gardens, we aim to create a patchwork of greener, more resilient neighbourhoods that not only look stunning, but also help manage surface water, while supporting local wildlife.
