Rewiggling the River

Issue:
Over the years, in parts of North Northamptonshire, Harpers Brook has been artificially straightened, causing water to flow faster with less resistance or natural flood defences, increasing the potential risk of flooding in downstream communities.

Solution:
This project will restore the river’s original meandering course – “rewiggling” Harpers Brook to slow the flow of water, reduce flood risk, and rewild the surrounding land. New riparian trees will be planted along the restored banks to enhance habitat and absorb carbon.

Benefits:
Rewiggling Harpers Brook will help reduce flood risk for communities downstream by slowing the flow of water and giving it more space to move through the landscape. At the same time, the project will create rich habitats for wildlife; from fish and birds to pollinators and aquatic plants, while improving water quality and reducing the chance of debris blockages. Riparian tree planting will contribute to local biodiversity and act as a natural carbon store, supporting climate resilience.

By investing in this project, local businesses can play a vital role in safeguarding their communities, supporting nature, and demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental responsibility.

Nature-Based Projects

Trees in Parks

Catchment: Harpers & Wootton Brook

The Trees in Parks project will plant a collection of striking specimen trees—such as ginkgo and liquidambar—in public parks and open green spaces across the Harpers Brook and Wootton Brook catchments. These trees will form elegant avenues and focal points that enhance local landscapes, provide shade, support pollinators, and improve resilience to flooding and climate change.

Front Garden Forests

Catchment: Harpers & Wootton Brook

This project will offer 100 beautiful blossom trees, including cherry and magnolia, to households across more urban parts of the Harpers Brook and Wootton Brook catchments. By planting trees in front gardens, we aim to create a patchwork of greener, more resilient neighbourhoods that not only look stunning, but also help manage surface water, while supporting local wildlife.

One Mile of Hedgerows

Catchment: Harpers and Wootton Brook

This project will create one mile of new hedgerow across the Harpers Brook and Wootton Brook catchments, linking farmland, villages, and small holdings to form a rich, connected landscape that supports biodiversity, slows surface water runoff, and contributes to climate resilience.

Target: £0 raised of £20,000
